Thermo Ash timber is obtained from ash lumber after thermal modification. Thanks to the low equilibrium moisture content of Thermo-Wood® (only about 3-6%), wood movement is minimized. The wood features 50% increased shape and dimensional stability. During the thermal modification process, the color darkens, resulting in a uniform hue throughout the entire volume. The process can be controlled to achieve the desired shade, creating a product that closely resembles exotic wood species.
Processing
Thermo-Wood® can be processed using the same tools as non-modified wood. It can be sawn, planed, and sanded without any issues, provided that sharp, high-quality tools are used. Thermally modified wood is more prone to cracking, so excessive pressure from planer rollers should be avoided. Due to its low moisture content, sanding produces more dust, requiring proper protective measures.
Gluing
Thermally modified wood absorbs water more slowly, which means water-based adhesives require a longer drying time—3 to 6 times longer than with regular wood. A wide range of synthetic adhesives from various manufacturers work effectively for bonding.
